William Goebel and John L. Sandford (also spelled Sanford) were bitter political rivals in the Covington and Kenton County area of Kentucky in the 1890's. Goebel wrote an insulting newspaper article about, among other things, Sandford's attempt to gain a pardon for a relative convicted of fraud. A few months later, in April, 1895, Goebel and Sandford, meeting on the street in Covington, exchanged words about the article, then each fired a shot at the other.
